Tree hugging in double-double!

June 22, 2009

Quadruple the tree for a colorful grocery shopping experience. A beautiful oak tree in Rochester, Michigan lends itself to this green experience for all seasons.

Look closely at that rock!

This rock was picked up in some shallow water in a Northern Michigan lake. Then I got a rock tumbler and let it run in the garage for a couple of weeks. Those home models aren’t quick or quiet, if you’ve never tried one.

Anyway, this cheeseburger looking rock was one that popped out of the polisher. It’s such a crack-up to me. It really is only an inch or inch and one-half across!

What sorts of rocks have you turned up?

Click to plant!

June 16, 2009

Odwalla is sponsoring a tree planting program in the state parks of certain certain states. Just go to the Odwalla site. If you don’t live in one of the states being sponsored, pick any one you like! Say, Michigan!

OK, these are tiny, tiny trees, probably like the trees you get through the county extension offices, but hopefully the parks take better care of them than some of us do and they thrive! Plant a tree today!

The sun shone down at a wonderful angle across all these objects. Can't you imagine a celestial alignment with the same sort of feel to it?

Northern Woods still blooming

Starflower. June 7. Northern lower Michigan.

The woods may be all greened up in most of the country, but the North Woods are still catching up. This delicate looking Starflower was blooming two days ago in Northern Michigan. It’s called a starflower because of the unusual seven leaves it has. This flower is really tricky to photograph due to the bright white of its flowers and the darker leaves and forest floor surrounding it. One way to get rid of either the too-brightness of the flowers or the too-darkness of the leaves is to adjust the exposure in a photo-editing software, such as Lightroom or Photoshop. Another way is to take two photos (using a tripod or fast continuous shots) at different exposures and combine them.

Portable Solar House

June 3, 2009

Doesn’t the idea of a portable solar house sound awesome? I can just imagine flexible living suburbs where you can just move your house as long as the weather is good or the job lasts and then move on when you need to. And without the built-ins and formadehydes of some current portable solutions (just ask some of the trailer dwellers from Katrina).

So, I checked out the portable solar house at Mathei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It’s got an exploded Airstream look on the outside and a minimalist European look to the inside. You’d probably like to have an outdoor cooking system – one of those cool adobe ovens or a your easy gas grille because the stove is a tiny two burner, but other things are full size. Like the shower and I’d take a real-size shower over a real-size stove any day!
